The chair

I have some weird genetics. If you sit next to me, you’d think I was 6 feet tall. But alas, unlike what my dating profile might say, I’m a lowly 5’8”. I just have a long torso. But chairs made for long torsos also assume long legs and vice versa. That’s why I don’t want A chair, I want MY chair.

My chair has joysticks a la “40 Year Old Virgin”. I play space games that really benefit from the added immersion of using sticks. But, everything else I do at my desk doesn’t use the sticks. Even the game that does use them, only does so for 50% of my play time. The other 50% is walking around in 1st person on a mouse and keyboard. So if the sticks were rigidly mounted, they’d be in the way most of the time. Not good for my back or my sanity. So instead, I designed a magnetically locking system that allows the joystick mounts to be pushed out of the way when not in use, and just as easily swung back into position. I partnered with Monstertech, who took my idea and remade it with thicker aluminum extrusions. The result is the fastest way to switch from dual sticks, to mouse and keyboard in the world. Seriously, there’s nothing faster. This was important because, if it’s slow, you won’t use it. I use this all the time. See for yourself here: https://youtu.be/SmDOgb3N3fo?feature=shared

My chair has a footrest, it’s motorized, and according to simulations, I could use that footrest as a diving board. It really doesn’t get more comfortable than kicking back at the end of the day and liberating myself from the oppressive clutches of gravity.

My chair has training wheels.

No, but really. Those joysticks have been sick, but when I’m locked in on a game, my other senses are hindered. I’m like a reverse-Daredevil. So I needed a way to prevent me from damaging my sticks when I pull my chair forward in the “sticks-back” position. So I made these fire-engine red guard that prevent my desk from crashing into the joystick buttons.

I may make another iteration out of TPU, but these have been working great as-is. They prevent me from damaging my expensive setup, and it’s just one less thing to worry about.
